Chelsea Bids Adieu to Connor Gallagher
Conor Gallagher is on the verge of leaving Chelsea to join Atletico Madrid for a deal worth £33 million.
The 24-year-old midfielder – who has been with the Blues since the age of eight – has agreed to a five-year contract with the Madrid-based club and will travel to Spain today, Monday 5 August, to finalise the transfer.
Despite being a fan favourite and a consistent performer, Gallagher turned down a new contract offer from Stamford Bridge management. The two-year deal was seen as too short, and with new manager Enzo Maresca’s possession-focused system, Gallagher was informed he would not be a regular starter.
This uncertainty over his future role prompted the England international to seek new opportunities.
Gallagher had previously rejected a move to Aston Villa after Chelsea accepted a record bid for him, opting instead for a fresh start abroad. His departure ends an 18-year association with the London club, where he made significant contributions, including 10 goals and 10 assists in 95 appearances over the past two seasons.
While his exit has drawn criticism, particularly for Chelsea letting go of a player with such commitment and passion, Gallagher now looks forward to a new chapter in the La Liga competition.
